Best way to capture a screenshot

While Command-Shift-3 takes a screenshot of your entire screen(s), there’s a better way! Use Command-Shitft-4 for your next screen shot – you’ll get crosshairs to select a portion of your screen for the screenshot you want.
This is a great way to send error messages to tech support or help with directions.

This hidden trick has become more useful than I thought when I first read about it. When you’re in a long email or at the bottom of a long web page (more uses?), you can tap on the top bar (where the time is) to quickly scroll back to the top.
If you’re on an iPhone now, scroll to the bottom and give it a try, just click on the clock to go straight to the top.

Adding in to the list of hidden characters and shortcuts, here’s one that I use daily since figuring it out.
The next time you’re typing an email address for anything on your iPhone, don’t let got of the dot(“.”) so quick. If you hold down on the period key, it will soon display common domain extesions like .com, .net, .org…. It doesn’t work everywhere (it’s not working now while I type this), but should work anywhere you are asked for your email address (see photo).

Your iPhone may never survive a trip through the washing machine (actually, just the touch screen stopped working,though it powered up!), but if you drop your device into a Mojito, or maybe a Firestone-Walker Pale Ale, you may be able to revive it with the old rice trick.

After quickly retrieving your phone from said water source, turn the power off (hold top button and swipe). Then dry off as much liquid as possible. You may want to use a wet towel to wash any liquid that may get sticky – it’s already wet, so you may even want to try rinsing it off briefly (although likely not recommended).

After my washing machine incident, I tried blowing it dry with my air compressor, but here’s the real secret to drying out your iPhone: put it in a sealed bag of rice for two days.

Doug tried this after he stirred a vodka-cranberry with his iPhone, and it worked!

Don’t learn the hard way, get a backup program in place. Mac.com has Backup application for remote copying of the files and data you determine. Apple’s TimeCapsule is the best solution and works great on several computers (we have 5 backing up to it). Get help to set it up the right way if you need to make sure it’s backing up periodically.

Save drag time

I’ve saved a lot of time avoiding menus, dragging to the trash (no not back alley dining) and using keystrokes instead. You can see the keystroke alternatives next to menu items, and one that saves extra dragging time (especially across two screens) is command-delete (Move to Trash).

When editing text, you can almost always double-click on a word to select the entire word.

You can also double-click-drag to select multiple successive words, or you can select a word and then use the shift key to extend the selection.

Triple click to select the paragraph (or line in some applications).

A quad-click used to “Select All” in Word and may still work in some other programs.

Sometimes this iPhone tip is forgotten or unknown: double-clicking on the bottom button will take you directly to phone favorites. If locked, it’ll display iPod controls. See more options in settings.

Typing on iPhone for extra characters

Two tricks while typing on the iPhone have become very useful for me. They save clicks and time while giving you visual reference to your result – before the key is selected! I wish my desktop keyboard would act this way:

1. To type a single character from the “.?123″ keyboard, press and hold on “.?123″ and slide your finger to the character you want. Yes, the screen changes to the other characters as soon as you press on the “.?123″ button, after sliding to the character you select the key by letting go on it. It works the other way around, with the “ABC” button.

2. For those éspëcîål characters, press and hold on a letter like, n, a, or i. After a second, a sub-menu will come up showing options for that letter. Scroll to the “ñ” or other character variation you want and release to select it. Again, it works with a lot of the other letters and characters.
